Emo Song Of The Week “Life On Mars” – David Bowie

December 14, 2009 2 comments

If you’re afraid of clowns, This Is Your Warning. David Bowie use to pack on more make up in the 70s than Tammy Faye. (I’m still kind of shocked he got Iman, he must do tricks) But this is one of my favorite Bowie Songs of all time, every time I hear it, I have to play it twice, it’s actually expected now.  I always picture some epic break-up scene in my head when I hear this. Some part sound so heart-felt and emo.

Emo Song Of The Week “Daria” Theme Song

December 7, 2009 Leave a comment

This takes me back to when I actually watched MTV. Real World, Loveline with Dr. Drew and Adam Carolla and Daria… Daria was the original Debby Downer/Ms. Underwhelmed, she reminded my of the cartoon version of Janeane Garofalo‘s high school days.

This is the Daria Tribute mad by MacClac.

This post was written with @PerfectEnigma in min, her Emo twitter rant range from AntiHorny sexcapades to delayed Bursar’s checks and suicidal laptops. It’s like Tracy Chapman 2.0

Emo Song Of The Week “Bleeding Love” – Leona Lewis

November 30, 2009 6 comments

This song and video are definitely emo. It’s like and updated version of Lisa Stanfield’s “All Woman,” in technicolor. Now I must admit, my first time ever hearing this song was at 7:30 this morning. I was being lazy, trying to kill two birds with one apple. It’s kind of difficult to think of the moody, low songs when the thought of going to work on Monday mornings isn’t as dreadful as in previous time. But I also promised @MsKitty0303 that I would look at the video on her blog (I’m the opposite of Ashanti: I’m always there when you call, but never on time: she posted like 10+ days ago [lol]) I like the song/video though, it’s good.

Emo Song Of The Week “Smile” – Olive

It’s funny that a song called “Smile” be depressing, but this song is one of those kind of tracks. I like the song, it’s like Abba on a sad day.

Emo Song Of The Week “Who’s Loving You” – Jackson 5

November 16, 2009 2 comments

Like many of us, I didn’t truly know the MJ/J5 catalog until this past Summer. When I first heard this song, I was floored. I actually said out loud, “where the hell have I been.” This song is so powerful, I couldn’t believe an eleven year old was actually singing. Then…of course, the sadness… all of that wasted potential masked and clouded by ghoulishness and media blah blah blah… This song is hot and catch me at the right moment, I will get misty I the high notes.

Emo Song Of The Week “I’ll Stand By You” – The Pretenders

November 9, 2009 Leave a comment

Before the litany of artists remade this epic song, The Pretenters killed it with “I’ll Stand By You.” Chrissy Hynde’s voice sounds like someone ripped out her soul and left her with a pen and a pad. Even the cinematography is Emo, it fades in and out like teardrops.

Emo Song Of The Week “Eventually” – Pink

November 1, 2009 Leave a comment

This song is a little old (2001), but it’s good, it’s from Pink’s M!sunderstood Album. I can remember playing this album the  Summer 2002 when I was a Camp Counselor: smoking in the forest in the dark with no flashlight, my headphones hanging over my ears so hear the miscellaneous sounds, thinking how tragic Pink’s life must have been. The whole second half of the album is heavy, she ‘got the party started,’ but that all fades once the song “Misery” comes on, etc, etc. After being around all of those kids all day, I really needed some quiet time for reflection around the greenery. Slow music makes me think.

Emo Song Of The Week “Stepping Stone” – Duffy

The song is so hot, another one of those songs I heard on television and just had to have. I first heard this on the promos leading up for Damages season 2- that alone made it interesting to me. I can still remember the entire tv spot,  Ellen (Rose Byrne) steps out of the towncar, looking all sexy and devious then we see her getting dressed in some strange bedroom. That had my so hype for the season, the promo went so well with the song, Duffy’s whole album is good, especially “Warwick Avenue”.

Emo Song Of The Week “Perfect Lie” The Engine Room

October 19, 2009 1 comment

I love this song. The beat and the music kind of pull you in, like  hypnosis or a trance. All those Nip/Tuck fans out there will recognize it, and the first video. It’s their theme song, and that’s how I first heard it. They fit so well together, the song’s about trying to be completely perfect and the show’s about Plastic Surgeons.  I saw the season premiere last Wednesday, it made me think of this song and their opening credits…if only mannequins actually could turn into real people. I always picture that John Hughes movie from the 80s with Kelly LeBrock. Weird Science: when the two nerds build the “perfect woman” using barbie dolls, hocus pocus and cutting-edge 1985 gadgetry. We can manufacture the “perfect face” or the “perfect abs” now, but what if we really could engineer people? No doubt, it’ll be seen sometime this century… From Dr. Frankenstein to Dr. Christian Troy.

I came across a Final Fantasy version of the video, it’s definitely creepy and emo.

Emo Song Of The Week “Tomorrow Never Dies” – Sheryl Crow

October 12, 2009 2 comments

All of the Bond songs are great and most of them have the same name as the movies: “Die Another Day,” “The World Is Not Enough,” and “Tomorrow Never Dies.” This song is really strong, it’s the opening song in the movie. When I first heard it, I had to download it. I was surprised it was Sheryl Crow, I was used to her being all chipper, soaking up the sun. When I hear this song I picture a singer in a Post-WWII Nightclub for existentialist and poets in Paris, everyone’s wearing black, low lighting, smoky air. The singer is full-on in tears by the end on the song and when she’s done, the crowd doesn’t clap, they snap their fingers.
