Concrete And Curves

November 22, 2009 3 comments

I took the picture on the left of L’Enfant Plaza on the Green Line in DC. It reminded me of Eero Saarinen’s TWA Terminal that used to be at JFK Airport (or Idlewild Airport, as it used to be called.) Concrete is definitely not one of the more flexible building materials and it doesn’t look too pleasing to the eyes either, but these two public spaces look great. They have their own elegance through their simplicity, something made the wouldn’t be achieved with paint or subway tiles. There’s very little color in either of the places, just light, concrete, the bare essentials and design. It’s so functional, yet sleak, I found aesthetic value in that even though the DC subways remind me of George Orwell’s book 1984. I kept picturing Winston riding the rails on his way to the factory in the morning.

NYC Song Of The Week “Renee” – Lost Boys

Now, I’m not from Queens, but this song takes me right back to the mid/late 90s Queensbridge or Ravenswood or something. This is one of those ghetto love stories. I remember watching this video on the The Box, channel 25 in Manhattan at midnight (they played all the uncensored videos). This is back when beepers ruled the world, bamboo earrings were fading away and bubble jackets just got there foot-hold in the hood.

Ghost Of Joey Ramone Spotted On The F-Train

October 7, 2009 Leave a comment

The ghost of Joey Ramone spotted again on the Lower East Side- this time on Queens-bound F-train late one Friday night. He was visibly distraught, sobbing and muttering incoherently.  It appears that he lost his famous sunglasses, Sharona left him for DJ AM and he still cant get over the fact that CBGB’s closed to open up a John Varvatos Showroom.
